Durham UniversitynamedEurope’s leading centre for space science researchers

Durham Universityhas been named asEurope’s leading university for highly cited researchers in astronomy and cosmology.

The Thomson-Reuters list of the “World’s most influential scientific minds 2014” also saw Durham ranked sixth in the world for the influence of its space science researchers.

Durham was the only UK University to feature in the World Top 10, ranking above prestigious institutions including NASA, The Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics inGermany, and the Harvard Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in theUSA.

The ranking also reflects the broad range of space science research atDurhamincluding the search for dark matter in the Universe, fundamental cosmology and the evolution of galaxies and black holes.

FourDurhamresearchers were highlighted in the rankings:

•Professor David Alexander, a senior member of the Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, and an international leader in studies of black holes;

•Professor Shaun Cole, Deputy Director of Durham’s Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC), who was recently a joint recipient of the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy;

•Professor Carlos Frenk FRS, Ogden Professor of Fundamental Physics and Director of the ICC, who is the recipient of this year’s Royal Astronomical Society Gold Medal for Astronomy, previously awarded to famous scientists such as Babbage, Einstein and Hubble;

•And Professor Ian Smail, Head of the Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, a leading expert on galaxy formation and evolution.
